Rust Printing on Paper
Workshop
Picture
Learn about the natural process of rusting as you create rust prints on a wide variety of papers
and then use those papers to make an accordion fold artists book and several mixed media collages.

  • Explore 4 different techniques to get unique prints from rusty metal and paper
  • Watch this video to see how to get "tin cans" rusty and ready for this class. I also share some ideas of where you can look for other pieces of rusty metal.
  • Discover how to coax shades of gray from your rusty metal to add color variation and extra interest to your prints.
  • Join the private FaceBook group where you can interact with other students and share photos of your prints, books and collages.

This live Zoom workshop will meet for two hours on 3 consecutive Tuesdays (session 1) or Saturdays (session 2). You'll receive a class handout by email that will include a copy of the supply list, video instructions on how to rust tin cans, and video instructions for getting the papers for your accordion book and mini collages cut and ready. You'll start with the little bit messy but fun process of setting up lots of papers to get rusty. I'll share my tips for collaging and stitching along with other techniques for making your artists book and mini collages. After the last day you'll receive a link to the recordings that will include the demonstrations featured in this workshop.

Day 1 - Prepare to make rust prints & rusted string
In the first week, I'll explain the rusting process, you'll get to try 4 different ways to prepare your papers for rusting and 2 ways to rust string. You'll brew a cup of tea that you won't be drinking but will instead, paint it on some rusty metal and then see the surprising results. There will be a combination of live demos where you can work along with me and a video showing one of the techniques that you can do on your own before the second class.

Day 2 - Make the accordion fold book
In the second week, you'll make the book covers, add a string closure, assemble the paper strips into one long folded book structure, and add pages using a simple pamphlet stitch binding. I'll demonstrate a variety of ways you can use your stash of newly rusted papers in your book and in your mini 3" x 6" collages.
Day 3 - Make mixed media collages
In the third week, you'll use some of your remaining rusted papers and incorporate the techniques you learned while creating your book to make a collection  of mini mixed media collages. Finish by embellishing them with colorful stitches, pieces of rusty metal and gold ink.
