Make Your Mark
a Slow Stitch Textile Collage Workshop
Picture

Combine slow stitching, fabric pieces, rusty bits of metal on rust dyed linen
to create a one-of-a-kind textile collage

In this 2-day live Zoom workshop you will:
  • Explore the technique of thread mark making
  • Learn tips for sketching and planning your slow stitching pattern and textile collages
  • Create 2-3 small collages that can be added to a larger piece of linen
  • Discover the relaxing meditative process of slow stitching
  • Receive a class kit with most all the supplies you will need (see below for kit contents),
  • Learn how you can make your own rusted fabric & thread

This live Zoom workshop, suitable for all levels, will meet for 2 1/2 hours on two consecutive Tuesdays. Create small textile collages using rust dyed linen, denim, indigo dyed cloth, rusty metal pieces, rust dyed thread and embroidery thread. Explore the art of thread mark making using just one stitch. While this is not an embroidery class, in addition to the running stitch I'll guide you in making the perfect French knot. Yes, you can do it, really! It's fun and it's a great way to add texture to your stitched pieces. Through demonstrations and hands-on class time, you'll be well-prepared to continue stitching on your own between sessions.
*Zoom recordings as well as any bonus videos will be available to you for one year.

Day 1
Experiment with various ways to use the running stitch on your test fabric piece. From just this one basic stitch, you'll be amazed at how many pattern variations can be created. Sketch a few ideas on paper for your slow stitching and collage compositions, letting the shape, color, texture, and patterns in the metal and fabric help guide you. Arrange the fabric and rusty metal pieces to form small collages and begin stitching them into place. You can decide whether to keep these pieces separate or integrate them into the larger fabric piece as part of your slow stitching project.

Day 2
On our final class day, we'll get together for a show-and-tell session where you're welcome to share your stitching progress and ask questions. I'll provide additional details on rusting your own fabric and thread, share my favorite sources for finding fabrics for dyeing and stitching projects. I'll also share other resources, including a link to a secret Pinterest board I curated that is packed full of inspiration for your future stitching projects. Our session will close with time for some leisurely slow stitching.
