The Eco-Printed Journal Workshop
What you will need to supply:
Day 1 - Eco-printing preparation
After class of Day 1 (to cook your bundles):
Day 2 - Making the journal
- Glass jar with lid that can hold 2 cups (16oz.) & hot water
- Protective table cover for your working area & rags or old towels for clean up
- 2 inch brush for applying the alum
- Pair of disposable gloves
- Two - 6" x 8.75" & two - 2.75" x 3.75" pieces of book board, heavy chipboard, back of a sketchbook or drawing paper pad (Grain direction does not matter, these are just to protect the paper in your bundles)
- 6 rubber bands
- Twine or string - for wrapping the bundles
- Wooden dowel or PVC pipe approx. 1.5" diameter x 9.5 - 10" long
- Small cup or bowl and a spoon to apply the flower sprinkles
- Optional: tweezers (can be helpful in placing and removing plant material)
After class of Day 1 (to cook your bundles):
- Potholder and tongs for handling hot bundles.
- Stock pot or roasting pan with a lid - something that will no longer be used for cooking food and is large enough to accommodate the 6" x 8.75" journal pages bundle and the 9.5 - 10" long rolled journal cover bundle
- water (you can add any of the extra alum mixture to this water)
- Portable electric burner or hot plate
- An outside area where you can set up to heat your bundles (for safety reasons, this should not be done in your kitchen)
Day 2 - Making the journal
- Small amount of PVA glue or similar glue
- Glue stick
- Small flat bristle brush for gluing
- Waxed linen thread or waxed embroidery thread, color of your choice to bind journal
- Sewing needle that will accommodate the thread you plan to use to bind your journal (I like to use a #22 or #24 Chenille needle)
- Sewing needle for stitching on paper
- sewing thread or embroidery thread for stitching pockets closed and/or other stitching in your journal
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Awl
- Scissors
