Eco-Printing Workshop

Capture the Beauty of Nature on Paper

Spend a relaxing day exploring the fascinating process of eco-printing while creating one-of-a-kind papers
using leaves and flowers gathered from my garden.

Eco-printing is a wonderful blend of nature, experimentation, and surprise. As bundles are opened throughout the day, you'll discover how different plants, papers, mordants, and natural dyes work together to create beautiful botanical prints that can never be exactly duplicated.
Whether you're a mixed-media artist, bookmaker, collage artist, printmaker, or simply curious about the process, this workshop will give you a solid foundation and plenty of inspiration to continue exploring at home.

No previous experience is necessary.

Throughout the day, we'll cover the basics of eco-printing, including:
  • Which leaves and flowers are best to use and why
  • What mordants are and why they're essential
  • Safe plant gathering and cooking practices
  • Different bundle styles and cooking methods
  • Using modifiers such as iron and rusty metal to create a wider range of colors
  • Working with natural dyes to add richness and variety to your prints

You'll prepare and 'cook' five different eco-print bundles:
  • Onion skin bundle
  • Layered rolled rusty can bundle
  • Layered flat bundle
  • Mini layered flat bundle using ferrous sulphate (liquid iron mordant)
  • Accordion-fold bundle simmered in a natural logwood dye bath
You’ll experiment with a wide assortment of papers, including printmaking paper, watercolor paper, deli paper, graph paper, security-envelope patterned paper, garden book pages, sheet music, copy paper, coffee filters, mulberry paper, and a few surprises.

Your finished papers are perfect for collages, handmade books, journals, cards,
mixed-media projects, gift tags, and more.

What past students are saying...

I cannot recommend this class highly enough!
Kathy is a superb and thorough teacher, and the class kit is full of her garden’s goodies. It's
overgenerous and so well-planned. I love my papers, and I want more eco-printing in my life!!!

Kimberly Logocki

“Thank you, Kathy!  I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this class and appreciate all you have so generously shared with us.
I learned so much. I can’t wait to work with the beautiful papers I dyed, and I’ve already begun collecting and drying
some leaves growing here around my house. I look forward to another class with you soon.”
Deb Dugan

“Thank you, Kathy, for a great class and for sharing your garden treasures and knowledge so freely! I really love every page I printed in the process.
Each had its own magic and possibilities. I’m so glad I signed up for this class. You are so well organized, easy to follow,
thorough, and your passion for your art and garden is so evident in everything. The package for the class was so beautifully presented with such care,
I knew I was going to have fun. Thank you so very much for a fun, interesting, and informative class!”
