General items:
  • sketchbook* - suggested size is something close to 7" x 10" with a wire binding so the sketchbook can lay flat when open                                                  (paper should be approx. 80lb. (119gsm) drawing paper or mixed media paper). This is the Canson sketchbook I like to use. 
          *You can work on individual sheets of paper if you prefer.
​           This class is more about having a place to practice and experiment with different kinds of collage on 'not precious' paper. 
​
  • glue sticks - I like the UHU brand but any brand you have on hand is fine
  • liquid acrylic medium (Elmers glue or PVA glue with a little water added will work as well)
  • flat bristle brush - approx. half to one inch
  • magazine, catalog or scrap paper to glue on to protect your work area from getting sticky with glue
  • ​small piece of fine sandpaper
  • ​scissors & craft or utility knife
  • mat for cutting
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • awl 
  • sewing or embroidery thread 
  • ​sewing needle
  • 8" x 10" piece of tracing paper
  • 8" x 10" piece of corrugated cardboard
Collage materials - paper: 
(these are just suggestions, you DO NOT need to have all of the papers listed here)
Papers headed for the recycle bin:
  • shopping bags
  • security envelopes & postage stamps
  • packaging - food boxes, tissue boxes,
  • tissue papers – from shoe boxes, gifts, etc.
  • old greeting cards
  • clothing tags​
  • corrugated cardboard
 
Things from a restaurant:
  • napkins
  • coasters
  • placemats
  • ice cream cone sleeve
  • to-go coffee cups
  • coffee cup cozies/sleeves
Other papers:
  • used tea bags, coffee filters
  • images from magazines
  • maps
  • old handwritten letters
  • graph paper/ ledger paper
  • old art torn or cut into smaller pieces
  • sheet music
  • dress maker pattern tissue paper
  • mulberry and other decorative papers
  • copyright free images (see link on the resources page of the handout)
  • photographs
  • paint sample cards
  • wall paper pieces
  • Book Pages - garden, dictionary, etc.
Collage materials - non-paper:

  • ​fabric scraps
  • ribbon
  • lace
  • wire
  • netting
  • ​pastic
  • cheesecloth
  • leaves
  • small sticks
  • dried flowers
  • leaf skeletons

For Painted Tissue Paper Video:
  • a few colors of acrylic paint (watercolor paint will work but may give less vibrant results)
  • soft bristle paint brush
  • cups for water
  • cups for mixing paint
  • white tissue paper - new, or used from gifts or shoe boxes etc.
  • Optional: other white translucent types of paper - mulberry, decorative lace types of paper, etc. ​
  • a board covered with freezer paper or heavy plastic or Teflon sheet approx. 12" x 16"
